Festive seasons often come with rich meals, sweet treats, late-night suppers, and more frequent gatherings. While these moments are part of the celebration, they can also leave many people feeling bloated, uncomfortable, or “out of rhythm” afterward.
In a feature by Shin Min Daily News, Dr Benjamin Yip, Senior Consultant in Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Medical Director at Alpha Digestive & Liver Centre, shared practical advice on how to ease post-festive bloating and support digestive recovery in a safe and sustainable way.
According to Dr Yip, the foods commonly enjoyed during festive periods are often higher in fat and sugar, which can place extra strain on the digestive system.
High-fat foods may slow stomach emptying, making you feel overly full and uncomfortable. High-sugar foods may contribute to bloating, while alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and interfere with normal digestive movement. When these habits continue over several days, the digestive system may struggle to return to its usual rhythm, leading to symptoms such as bloating, reflux, constipation, or abdominal discomfort.
When digestive symptoms appear after overindulgence, some people may be tempted to turn to “detox” plans for a quick fix. However, Dr Yip advises against relying on extreme measures such as laxatives, very-low-calorie diets, or prolonged juice-only cleanses.
The digestive system already has its own ability to regulate and recover. In most cases, what it needs is not harsh restriction, but a gentle return to balanced eating, hydration, and healthier habits. Extreme detox methods may disrupt normal gut function, worsen dehydration, cause electrolyte imbalance, and even make bloating worse once normal eating resumes.
Dr Yip highlights the importance of proper hydration in helping the gut recover. Drinking enough fluids — especially water and soups — can support digestion, help soften stools, and encourage healthier bowel movement.
For some people, warm drinks or warm foods may also feel more soothing on the stomach. At the same time, it is wise to avoid over-consuming sugary drinks or highly caffeinated beverages, which may worsen dehydration or further irritate the digestive system.
To help digestion settle after festive overeating, Dr Yip recommends including more foods that are beneficial to gut health:
He also suggests temporarily cutting back on greasy, fatty, and highly processed foods after a period of overindulgence, giving the digestive system more room to recover.
While festive bloating often improves with time, Dr Yip reminds readers that long-term gut health is built on consistent daily habits. A balanced diet, adequate fluids, enough fibre, regular physical activity, proper sleep, and stress management all play an important role in supporting digestion throughout the year.
If symptoms such as persistent bloating, reflux, abdominal pain, or noticeable changes in bowel habits do not improve, it is best to seek medical attention early rather than allow a small issue to develop into a longer-term problem.
The best way to recover after festive feasting is not through punishment or extreme detoxes, but through gentle, steady adjustments. Returning to balanced meals, drinking enough fluids, increasing fibre, and giving your body time to reset can go a long way in helping your gut feel comfortable again.
