Traveling opens us up to new adventures—and sometimes, new digestive problems. During my recent radio interview, I was invited to share more about three of the most common gastrointestinal issues that arise during travel: constipation, food poisoning, and indigestion.
Here’s what every traveller should know:
Constipation may not be glamorous, but it's one of the most frequent issues people face on holiday. Why?
Tips: Drink more water, include fibre-rich food, keep moving, and don’t ignore the urge to go.
Food poisoning is caused by ingesting harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or toxins. During travel—especially to warmer or developing regions—there’s a higher risk due to:
Be cautious with:
While enjoying fresh sushi or oysters can be part of the experience, it’s best to do so at reputable restaurants with strong hygiene standards. For individuals with weakened immunity or sensitive stomachs, avoiding raw foods altogether may be the safer option.
When on holiday, we tend to eat more—and indulge in foods or drinks that our body isn’t used to. This can lead to:
These factors can cause bloating, abdominal discomfort, and sometimes even acid reflux—a burning sensation in the chest or throat caused by stomach acid moving upward.
Tips: Eat slowly, avoid heavy meals before bed, limit alcohol intake, and don’t overdo unfamiliar or spicy foods.
Most of these issues resolve on their own. However, if symptoms persist or worsen—especially with fever, vomiting, or severe pain—it’s best to consult a doctor.
Enjoy your trip—but listen to your gut.
Your digestive health plays a big role in how much you enjoy your travels. A few mindful choices can go a long way in keeping your holiday worry-free.
