When a Holiday Hurts: Serious Digestive Conditions That Can Disrupt Your Travels

While bloating or constipation may be common during travel, some digestive symptoms go beyond discomfort—and may signal a much more serious issue.

During the radio show, I shared about how I’ve seen patients—both locals and travellers—who required urgent medical attention due to digestive emergencies. These issues don’t always begin during travel, but can be triggered or worsened by travel-related stress, dehydration, or foodborne illness—especially in individuals with pre-existing gastrointestinal conditions.

Acute Gastroenteritis: More Than Just Food Poisoning

In severe cases of food poisoning, symptoms can progress quickly from mild discomfort to vomiting, diarrhoea, high fever, and dehydration. Patients may faint, show low blood pressure, or even experience organ disruption due to poor blood flow and lack of urination. These cases often require hospitalisation for IV fluids, electrolyte support, and close monitoring.

For those with weakened immunity or underlying conditions, such as gastric ulcers or even gastric cancer, the body’s ability to fight infection or recover from dehydration may be compromised—leading to more serious outcomes.

Warning Signs That Should Never Be Ignored

Some symptoms may seem like ordinary travel bugs—but could actually signal internal bleeding or severe inflammation:

  • Blood in stool or vomit (black, tarry stools or coffee-ground vomit)
  • Fever and chills
  • Severe fatigue or dizziness
  • Minimal urination or dry mouth
  • Sharp, persistent abdominal pain
  • Rapid heart rate or confusion (in extreme dehydration)

These symptoms should never be brushed aside as "just bad food." If they occur, especially in someone with a known history of gastric, liver, or bowel conditions, immediate medical care is critical.

A Word for Travellers with Underlying Digestive Conditions

If you have a known history of:

  • Gastric ulcers or gastritis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Liver disease
  • Gastric cancer (current or in remission)

…then travel stress, dietary shifts, and infections can trigger flare-ups or dangerous complications.

Speak to your doctor before travelling to ensure you’re prepared with medication, dietary guidelines, and emergency contacts for overseas care.
