Background

Dr Benjamin Yip graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). He was then conferred as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, United Kingdom (UK). Thereafter, he completed his specialist training in General Medicine as well as his advanced specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the National University Hospital, Singapore. 

Dr Yip was felicitated with the Health Manpower Development Plan award to sub-specialise in Advanced Endoscopy at the Royal Free and University College Hospitals in London, UK. During his tenure, he trained with several leading members of the Advanced Endoscopy community. He also received training in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), Spyglass™ cholangioscopy, deep enteroscopy and enteral dilation/stenting. 

Prior to his private practice, Dr Yip served in the public sector for almost two decades. He was appointed as a Consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) as well as Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH). In addition, he is currently a Visiting Consultant Gastroenterologist at NTFGH.  

In recognition of his significant professional contributions to the field of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Dr Yip was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, as well as the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh, UK). 

Dr Benjamin Yip’s most recent accolade was the prestigious fellowship designation awarded to him by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). As a well-experienced Liver specialist and Gastroenterologist in Singapore, he was recognised for his contributions not only in clinical endoscopy but in endoscopy-related leadership, education and research as well. He is one of the very few Gastroenterologists in Singapore to be awarded this fellowship.

Clinical practice and Expertise

Dr Benjamin Yip sees patients with General Medical issues as well as Gastroenterology/Hepatology problems. He sees patients of this nature who are acutely ill in the Emergency Department as well as in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and general wards. He also manages these patients in the outpatient clinic setting.  

In the realm of Gastroenterology, Dr Yip’s main interest and joy lies in endoscopy. He regularly performs general endoscopies such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy (both diagnostic and therapeutic). However, his expertise lies in Advanced Endoscopy, where he performs complex endoscopic procedures, including ERCP, EUS, single balloon Enteroscopy, Spyglass™ Cholangioscopy and Enteral Dilation/Stenting. He was also on the call roster for gastrointestinal bleeds as well as ERCP at KTPH and NTFGH.

Dr Yip has been involved in over 6000 endoscopies since 2010 and started the Cholangioscopy service at KTPH after his return from Advanced Endoscopy training in the UK. In NTFGH, he was the only specialist performing both the ERCP procedure as well as the EUS procedure. In 2011, he received the National Healthcare Group Long Service and National University Health System Academic Development Awards. He has also served on the Endoscopy and Clinical Devices committees, where he helped chart the direction of these services for the hospital. In addition, he was a member of the Chapter of Gastroenterologists, Academy of Medicine, Singapore. Furthermore, in 2016 he was awarded the Alexandra Health Service Champion Award in recognition of his dedication to patient care.

 

Academics and Research

Dr Benjamin Yip is passionate about clinical research. He enjoys formulating clinical queries and deciphering them through his clinical research. He has presented his work at numerous local, regional and international conferences and has published several research articles in peer-reviewed journals.  

As a testament to his research capabilities, Dr Yip was awarded the National Medical Research Council MOH Health Research Scholarship to pursue the Master of Clinical Investigation (MCI) degree course conducted at NUS.

Medical education and Teaching

As a respected Gastroenterologist and Liver specialist, Dr Benjamin Yip aspires to share his knowledge with all his students. He enjoys mentoring and teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He also regularly teaches medical students from both Yong Loo Lin (YLL) and Lee Kong Chian (LKC) medical schools and holds academic appointments in both these institutions. In addition, he was the posting lead for LKC medical students. 

Dr Yip was the Associate Programme Director, National Healthcare Group, Gastroenterology Senior Residency Programme. He was actively involved not only in teaching the Gastroenterology trainees but also in planning their curriculum and mentoring them throughout their training. Moreover, he was involved in mentoring house officers (interns) in his capacity as a clinical supervisor. In recognition of his dedication to medical education, in 2018, he was awarded the Yishun Health Teaching Recognition Award. Additionally, in recognition of his commitment and service, he was awarded the Yishun Health and National Healthcare Group Long Service Award in 2019.

 

Activities and Interests

Dr Benjamin Yip is happily married and blessed with two children. He enjoys spending time with his family, especially with his children. In his spare time, he enjoys running regularly and watching movies. He is also a motorcar enthusiast and enjoys reading about the latest car models and going for test drives. Last but not least, he enjoys travelling and relishes planning detailed itineraries for every trip, much to the delight of his wife!
